Officials of the Kano State Hisbah Board have pulled down a site in Hotoron Arewa that had gained fame for reportedly offering healing water. The site, which had drawn massive crowds from across Kano and neighboring states, is now in ruins following actions taken by the Hisbah, the religious police in the state.
The area became well known in recent weeks after word spread that the water there had miraculous powers. Many people, some suffering from various health conditions, visited in hopes of being cured. However, the Hisbah Board, led by Director General Abba Sufi, said the situation had gone out of control, prompting their intervention.
Speaking to PUNCH Online in a phone call, Sufi confirmed the demolition, saying it was carried out on Monday, April 21. “The place was demolished on Monday, April 21 after we discovered that some disgruntled elements are using the place to mislead desperate patients seeking treatment,” he said.
He also noted that the board could not allow such activities to continue unchecked. “We will not allow some ‘undesirable elements’ to mislead people in the name of getting treatment for whatever ailments,” he added.
According to the Hisbah chief, investigations showed that some individuals were taking advantage of vulnerable visitors, selling false hope and collecting money in the process. He described the entire setup as a scam and urged the public to be cautious.
