Kano Police Deny Attack on Igbo Passengers, Warn Against Fake News

The Kano State Police Command has dismissed claims circulating on social media about a reprisal attack on an 18-seater bus carrying Igbo passengers in Kano. The police described the news as false and urged the public to stop spreading misinformation that could incite panic or unrest.

The rumors emerged in the wake of the tragic mob attack in Edo State, where 16 northern travelers lost their lives. Following this incident, unverified reports began spreading online, alleging that Igbo passengers in Kano had been targeted in retaliation. However, the police have now come forward to set the record straight.

Speaking on the matter, the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, stated that there was no truth to the claims. He noted that the command had launched an investigation to identify those responsible for spreading the false information.

“The Kano State Police Command wishes to inform the public that the viral news circulating on social media regarding an attack on an 18-seater bus carrying Igbo passengers in Kano is entirely false and misleading,” SP Haruna said.

He further called on residents to be cautious about sharing unverified news, as doing so could escalate tensions and create unnecessary fear within communities. The police emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents in Kano, regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds.

“We urge members of the public to disregard this fake news and refrain from spreading unverified information, misinformation, and hate speeches that can cause harm, panic, and unrest in the community,” SP Haruna noted.

The police also reassured the public that measures were in place to maintain peace and order in the state. They encouraged people to report any suspicious activities or individuals spreading false reports to the nearest police station or through emergency contact numbers.

“The Kano State Police Command is committed to maintaining law and order in the state and ensuring the safety and security of all residents, regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds,” SP Haruna stated.
