Kebbi Suspends Perm Sec for Claiming State, Sokoto Have More Gays, Lesbians

The Kebbi State government has suspended a senior official, Nasiru Abubakar Kigo, for making controversial claims about the presence of homosexuals in the state. Kigo, who serves as a permanent secretary in the cabinet office, alleged that Kebbi and Sokoto states have the highest number of registered gays and lesbians.

The suspension was confirmed by Ahmed Idris, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, on Friday. According to him, the decision was taken in response to Kigo’s statement, which the government views as both inappropriate and unfounded.

A formal letter issued by the Head of Service, Malami Shekare, notified Kigo of his indefinite suspension. The letter states: “According to civil service rules, you are to proceed on suspension pending the outcome of an investigation on your claims of registered homosexuals and lesbians in Kebbi State. Your statement constitutes social misconduct and a dent on a morally decent state.”

The Kebbi State Government has since distanced itself from Kigo’s remarks. In an official statement, it dismissed his claims as baseless and without any factual backing. The government urged the public to disregard the statement, affirming that there is no record of such registrations in the state.

Kigo, who is also known as an Islamic cleric, made the statement during a seminar at Adamu Aliero Housing Estate in Birnin Kebbi during Ramadan. His remarks quickly gained attention, drawing criticism from various quarters.

Following the backlash, the government moved swiftly to take action. Officials say an investigation will be conducted to determine the motive behind his statement and any potential consequences. Meanwhile, Kigo will remain suspended until further notice.
