Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has assured that strong action will be taken against criminals operating in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area and other parts of Kogi West, following the murder of a retired army officer, Major Joe Ajayi.
The governor made this known during a condolence visit to the family of the deceased in Odo-Ape community. In a message delivered by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismail Isah, Governor Ododo described the late Major as “a true patriot who served the country with honour and dedication,” and noted that the sad incident would not be ignored.
“We are here to sympathise with the family for the loss of our brother. I was personally touched when I heard about his death.
“Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will remain with us. It would be a disservice to his memory if we fold our arms and allow criminals to take over our land,” the governor said.
The governor assured the people that his government would go after all those responsible and bring them to justice. He added that every possible effort would be made to restore safety in the region, especially in communities that have experienced recent acts of violence.
Governor Ododo also used the opportunity to speak about the dangers of allowing unverified people into local communities. He warned traditional rulers to be very careful when giving out land and urged them to make sure those claiming to be investors are properly checked.
He said clearly, “Any individual or group found aiding or abetting crime in any community will face the full wrath of the law.”
During his visit, the governor stopped by a nearby local security base and spoke to officers on the importance of being alert and working closely with residents to keep the area safe. He said security efforts can only succeed if everyone is involved — including local leaders and youth groups.
In response, Titus Ajayi, younger brother to the late Major Joe Ajayi, expressed appreciation for the governor’s visit. He said the presence of the state’s top official during such a painful time gave them strength and hope that justice would be done.
The late Major Ajayi was well known in the area for his service and was respected for his discipline and calm nature. His death has caused deep sorrow in the Odo-Ape community, with many calling for quick action to prevent future attacks.
