Ladoja Backs Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers, Calls for Peaceful Resolution

Former Oyo State governor and Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule in Rivers State. Ladoja stated that the move has contributed to maintaining relative peace in the crisis-ridden state.

On March 18, 2025, President Tinubu declared emergency rule in Rivers State due to the prolonged political conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state House of Assembly, which is largely aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike. As part of this decision, Tinubu suspended both the governor and the lawmakers for six months and appointed a sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.

The emergency rule has sparked debates across the country, with many questioning the legality of Tinubu’s action. Critics argue that the decision goes against the Nigerian Constitution and sets a troubling precedent. However, some believe it was necessary to prevent further instability in the state.

Ladoja, speaking to journalists at his residence in Bodija, Ibadan, after Eid-el-Fitri prayers on Tuesday, noted that Tinubu’s action was a reasonable step toward restoring order in Rivers State.

“The emergency rule declared by the President in Rivers is a welcomed development if that is what will restore peace back to the state,” Ladoja said.

He also urged the suspended Governor Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to put aside their differences for the sake of the state’s progress. He noted that if their goal is truly to serve the people, they should find a way to resolve their issues amicably.

Ladoja further pointed out that several parties involved in the crisis have already taken the matter to court, including governors from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who have approached the Supreme Court for a ruling.

“Some of them have approached the court; even the PDP governors had gone to the Supreme Court. The judgment will be faster. So, whatever the court says will bind both parties,” Ladoja added.
