The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria has firmly stated that there is no acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) within the nation’s military structure. This announcement was made on Monday in Abuja by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information.
The clarification came in response to rumors and reports circulating that an acting COAS had been appointed. Brig.-Gen. Gusau refuted these claims and emphasized that the military leadership remains stable and intact. He noted that the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is currently on his 2024 annual leave and remains fully in charge of his responsibilities.
“The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is currently on a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave,” Gusau explained. He added that General Lagbaja is healthy and will resume his official duties at the end of his leave period.
During Lagbaja’s absence, normal procedures are being followed. Gusau clarified that Major General Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is handling routine briefings and updates for the COAS, as per the military’s standard operational practices. This system ensures that all critical tasks continue smoothly even when senior officers are on leave.
In his statement, Gusau took the opportunity to call out individuals spreading what he referred to as “unfounded rumors.” He urged people to stop disseminating false information about the military’s leadership and emphasized the importance of verifying facts before making public claims.
“The military remains focused on achieving its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity. The relative peace being enjoyed today is a direct result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the AFN leadership.
“To this end, the AFN and relevant security agencies have been mandated to take necessary action against any individual or group advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country. The CDS appreciates Nigerians for their support and prayers. Victory is assured,” he added.
