The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has directed that a full investigation be carried out over bribery allegations involving a police tactical commander based in Okokomaiko.
The officer in question was reportedly linked to misconduct during the investigation and prosecution of six suspects who are being tried for serious crimes.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Lagos Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that the Police Commissioner took immediate action after receiving reports pointing to irregularities in the conduct of the commander during the case.
According to Hundeyin, a committee made up of senior officers has been formed to look into the allegations. The team is led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and also includes the officer in charge of Legal Affairs within the command. The committee is expected to complete its work and submit findings within one week.
“To ensure a fair process, the officer under investigation has already been moved out of the tactical unit,” Hundeyin noted. This decision was made to allow for an unbiased investigation without interference or influence from the accused officer.
Hundeyin further noted that the Lagos Police Command maintains a strong stance against corruption or any form of compromise in the justice process. “The outcome of the investigation will certainly be made public,” he added.
He assured residents that if the allegations are confirmed, proper disciplinary steps will be taken without delay. “The command will make sure that if the officer involved is found wanting, in anyway, appropriate disciplinary measures will be promptly applied to serve as effective deterrent to others,” Hundeyin said.
Commissioner Jimoh has also urged the public to remain calm and continue to place their trust in the police. He promised that all valid complaints will be addressed, and no officer found guilty of wrongdoing will go unpunished.
