Four people are currently fighting for their lives after an explosion rocked a popular tech hub in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday evening. The incident, which took place at a CCTV dealer’s shop on Kodesho Street near the well-known Computer Village, has left the community shaken.
Tragically, one of the victims passed away on Saturday after succumbing to severe burns from the blast.
The explosion occurred around 6:35 p.m. on Friday, causing extensive damage and resulting in severe injuries for the five people who were near the site at the time. An anonymous source, a local dealer in the tech area, provided details about the tragic outcome. “We lost one of them on Saturday evening. The doctors made efforts to save him, but he didn’t make it,” they shared.
The explosion’s impact on the victims was described as life-threatening, with all of them suffering critical burns. “The victims were closely affected by the explosion, and this resulted in severe burns they suffered. As I speak to you, the four others are currently battling for their lives,” the source noted.
In a statement, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the number of injuries, stating that the five victims were immediately rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for urgent medical treatment. Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the death of one victim on Saturday, saying, “Yes, we have been informed that one of them died on Saturday.”
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with Hundeyin adding, “The investigation is still on. We will make it public as soon as it is concluded.” While authorities have not yet determined the exact cause, the incident has raised concerns over safety in the area, especially in such a high-traffic commercial zone.
This explosion follows a similar incident just a week earlier in the Mushin area, where a military-grade grenade exploded, killing a welder and injuring three others. That explosion also caused widespread panic, leaving some residents without homes due to the blast’s impact on nearby buildings.
