Lagos LG Boss Suspends Olu-Epe Installation, Cancels Eid Prayers

The chairperson, Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State, Surah Animashaun, has announced the suspension of the planned installation of a new traditional ruler in Epe Kingdom. This development follows a dispute between two high-ranking chiefs, both claiming the right to ascend the throne as the next Olu-Epe.

In an official letter sent to the Grand Chief Imam of Epe on Tuesday, Animashaun also revealed that all Eid-al-Kabir (Ileya) celebrations, including Jumat prayers, scheduled to take place at the central mosque and the Eid ground in Epe, have been called off. She noted that the decision was made to prevent any possible unrest or crisis due to the ongoing leadership conflict.

The late monarch, Oba Shefiu Adewale, who passed away on May 31, 2025, left a vacant stool that has since sparked a struggle between two respected chiefs: Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji. Both men have reportedly been presenting themselves as the rightful heir to the throne.

According to the statement from the LG chairperson, “Sequel to the dual installation of the new Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom on the 2nd of June, 2025 which is legally null and void as a result of the recent passing of immediate Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom Oba Shefiu Adewale, I am writing to inform your office that High Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and High Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji both parading themselves as the newly installed Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom are hereby suspended till further hearing from the authorities.”

She also added that, “Due to the unforeseen circumstances, security concerns, public health issues and all, the Eid-l-Adha (Ileya) and Jumat services celebration is hereby cancelled at the first Epe Central Mosque, Oke Balogun and Eid Ground at Eid Street, Oke Balogun Epe respectively.”

The local government chairperson noted that these measures are temporary and that updates will be provided as the situation develops. She urged the community to remain peaceful while higher authorities look into the matter.

Oba Shefiu Adewale, whose passing led to the current tension, was 86 years old. He died in the early hours of Saturday, May 31. His death was confirmed by High Chief Odedeogboro Balogun of Epe Kingdom, Musiliu Adeniyi, who said, “The news is true. It was this morning. He will be buried 4’O clock today.”

Oba Adewale had a long-standing presence in the kingdom, having previously held the position of Otun-Balogun, the third most senior chieftaincy title in the community. He was later elevated to the role of Balogun before finally becoming king.
