Lagos Partners with Circuits of Africa to Build Formula 1 Race Track

The Lagos State Government has partnered with Circuits of Africa to develop a Formula 1-standard race track in the state. This project aims to put Nigeria on the global motorsport map while boosting economic development and tourism.

During a high-level meeting held in Lagos on Wednesday, officials from the Lagos State Government and representatives from Circuits of Africa finalized plans for the state-of-the-art facility.

The event was attended by Circuits of Africa CEO, Siu-Anne Marie Gill, alongside key government figures, including Mr. Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor; Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning & Urban Development; Mr. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission; and Surv. Ayokunnu Adesina, Surveyor General of Lagos State, among others.

Speaking at the agreement signing, Gill described the project as more than just a motorsport initiative. She stated, “This project transcends motorsport. It’s about driving economic development, expanding infrastructure, and stimulating a new wave of talent in Africa.”

Gill further noted that Lagos is the perfect location for this ambitious vision, and she expressed excitement about collaborating with the government and international investors. She also thanked Mr. Seyi Tinubu for his role in guiding the project from the beginning and acknowledged Hon. James Faleke for his support.

She praised Tinubu’s commitment to sustainable development under the Renewed Hope Agenda and noted that the project aligns with Lagos’ long-term goal of becoming a global hub for sports and tourism. “Lagos has always been a metropolis driven by futuristic vision and aspiration, and this project perfectly aligns with our commitment to making Lagos a global hub for sports and tourism,” she said.

The development of the Formula 1-standard race track is expected to attract major international racing events, increase tourism, and create numerous job opportunities. It is also projected to enhance the state’s infrastructure while opening doors for young talent in the motorsport industry.

At the event, Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, was introduced as an ambassador for Circuits of Africa. His involvement is seen as a way to promote the project and engage young Nigerians in the world of motorsports.
