Lakurawa Terrorists’ Explosive Device Kills Six, Injures Three in Sokoto

About six people were killed and three others injured on Sunday in Sokoto State after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated. The explosion is believed to have been caused by a device planted by the newly formed Lakurawa terrorist group, which is active in both Sokoto and Kebbi states.

The deadly blast occurred in Gwabro village, located within Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto. Residents say the victims were part of a group of villagers moving between communities during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration. The attack has sent shockwaves through the region, raising fears about the growing presence of the Lakurawa group.

According to a local source familiar with the situation, the explosion happened in the afternoon as young villagers made their way from Gwabro to nearby Zurmuku to pay customary holiday visits.

“They were simply unfortunate. These innocent victims were walking from Gwabro to the nearby Zurmuku community when they stumbled upon the device. Perhaps unaware of its nature, they may have touched it, which resulted in the explosion,” the source said.

Out of those affected, six men died on the spot while three women sustained serious injuries. The injured victims were immediately rushed to Tangaza General Hospital, where they are now receiving treatment.

The spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, ASP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident. He noted that an investigation has started and efforts are ongoing to identify those responsible for planting the explosive.
