Learn To Manage, Switch Off Lights To Save Electricity Bills – Tinubu Advices Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu, in a media chat held in Lagos State, called on Nigerians to adopt energy-saving practices, including switching off lights when not in use.

According to the president, such measures could significantly reduce electricity bills for households and businesses.

“It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage,” Tinubu stated during the discussion with journalists.

The president also emphasized his stance on market policies, reiterating that he does not support price control measures. “I don’t believe in price control, we will work hard to supply the market,” he said.

This advice comes amidst rising utility costs in Nigeria. Shortly after taking office, President Tinubu’s administration implemented major policy changes, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and an increase in electricity tariffs.

These decisions, while aimed at improving economic sustainability, have drawn criticism for exacerbating the financial challenges faced by many Nigerians.

In April 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission raised tariffs for customers under the Band A category, increasing the cost from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour. The steep hike has sparked widespread discontent, as many Nigerians struggle to cope with the growing cost of living.
