Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has called on Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd), to cease the appointments of Local Government Administrators and the reconstitution of state boards, following a recent Federal High Court ruling that prohibits such actions.
In a statement, George expressed concern over Ibas’ apparent disregard for a court order issued by Justice Adamu Muhammed, which clearly barred the Administrator from appointing sole administrators for the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state. Despite the court’s ruling, Ibas went ahead with the appointments, leading to accusations of overstepping legal boundaries and undermining the authority of the judiciary.
“Your appointment as Administrator is a misnomer. You were not elected by the people of Rivers State. Why are you flouting a court order and appointing administrators when Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains constitutionally in office?” George noted, highlighting the issue of legitimacy in Ibas’ actions.
Justice Muhammed’s ruling was clear in its instructions, yet Ibas proceeded with the appointments, creating a stir among PDP members and legal experts alike. Many have criticized Ibas for his actions, suggesting that the defiance could have serious political and legal consequences.
George, a former military officer, pointed out that Ibas’ tenure as Administrator is set to expire on September 18, 2024, and warned that those currently supporting him might abandon him once his term ends.
“This is not a military regime. The constitution remains intact. Those pushing you now will throw you under the bus. If you drown legally or politically, they will disown you. Apply the brake now. Did the National Assembly approve these appointments? Do you now wield executive and legislative powers in Rivers State?” George questioned, urging Ibas to reconsider his actions.
