Liverpool Dominates West Ham 5-0 to Extend Premier League Lead

Liverpool delivered a stunning performance against West Ham United, securing a commanding 5-0 victory at the London Stadium on December 29, 2024. The win propelled the Reds to an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League, solidifying their position as title favorites as the year came to a close.

Luis Diaz, back in the lineup after being rested for the Boxing Day win over Leicester, opened the scoring in the 30th minute. A deflected pass fell perfectly for Diaz, who made no mistake, slotting the ball into the bottom corner. West Ham came close to leveling through Mohammed Kudus, but his shot rebounded off the post, denying the Hammers a crucial goal.

Liverpool’s dominance grew as the match progressed. Just before halftime, Cody Gakpo converted a clever setup from Mohamed Salah, netting his ninth goal in 14 games. Moments later, Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead with a curling strike that caught West Ham’s goalkeeper off guard, marking his 20th goal of the season.

In the second half, Liverpool’s relentless attack continued. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a thunderous strike that deflected off a defender, further demoralizing West Ham. Diogo Jota, introduced as a substitute, completed the rout with a well-taken goal assisted by a dazzling Salah dribble past multiple defenders.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot maintained caution despite the team’s strong position. “Nothing can be won yet,” he reiterated, with the season nearing its halfway mark. However, with 23 wins in 27 matches, Slot’s leadership has been exceptional, silencing doubters following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

The defeat heaps pressure on West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui, whose side had been enjoying a four-game unbeaten streak before this heavy loss. Meanwhile, rumors surrounding the futures of key Liverpool players, including Salah, Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk, persist, but their focus remains firmly on securing Liverpool’s second league title in 35 years.
