Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed confidence that Erik ten Hag, recently dismissed from his role as Manchester United’s manager, will find his way back to a top club soon. Ten Hag’s departure comes as Manchester United struggles to gain momentum in the Premier League, sitting at an unexpected 14th place. His final match in charge ended in a 2-1 loss to West Ham, capping off a difficult two-year stint at the helm of the club.
Slot, whose Liverpool team defeated Manchester United 3-0 in September, was asked about Ten Hag’s dismissal during a press conference on Tuesday. The discussion took place ahead of Liverpool’s League Cup match against Brighton, with reporters eager for Slot’s reaction to the news of Ten Hag’s exit. Despite the long-standing rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United, Slot was empathetic, noting the difficult reality managers often face in competitive football.
Reflecting on the shared bond of nationality with Ten Hag, Slot, himself Dutch, spoke with empathy and understanding. “He’s a Dutch manager which makes it even harder for me,” said Slot, now in his first season managing Liverpool after replacing Jurgen Klopp. “Thoughts are with him. We are all in this job so we know it can happen.”
Slot emphasized Ten Hag’s dedication to the role, acknowledging the hard work that went into his time at Manchester United. The Liverpool manager spoke from experience, as coaches in high-profile positions frequently face intense scrutiny and pressure. “I know him a little bit and I know how much work he puts into it,” Slot remarked, adding, “For him, it’s, of course, a pity.”
Despite the turbulent end to Ten Hag’s tenure in England, Slot pointed out his successful history with Ajax, where he led the Dutch club to impressive achievements before joining Manchester United. Slot referred to Ten Hag’s time in England as well, highlighting his accomplishments, including two trophies: the League Cup and the FA Cup.
Slot wrapped up his thoughts on an optimistic note, saying, “I think we’ll see him at a big club again.”
