Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has reached out to key members, including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, urging them to reconcile and return to the party. His appeal comes amidst ongoing efforts to mend divisions within the party.
Abure’s leadership has faced resistance from some prominent members, who questioned the legitimacy of his reelection during a controversial convention held in Nnewi. Critics argued that the process lacked inclusivity and called for broader representation in decision-making. This dispute led to the creation of a 29-member caretaker committee in July, spearheaded by former Minister of Finance, Nnenadi Usman. The committee was tasked with organizing a more comprehensive election to restructure the party’s leadership at all levels.
However, a Federal High Court in Abuja recently ruled in favor of Abure, affirming his position as the legitimate national chairman. Following the court’s decision, Abure has intensified efforts to rebuild unity within the party.
“I want to say there is no more crisis in the party,” Abure stated during an interview. He emphasized the importance of moving forward, noting, “The court has said there is only one leader in LP… All those who feel offended should come back to the party. We have forgiven all.”
Abure highlighted that the Labour Party remains a “big family” and stressed the need for unity to tackle the pressing challenges facing Nigeria. He pointed out the country’s current hardships, urging both leaders and citizens to reflect deeply on the way forward.
According to Abure, meaningful electoral reform is crucial to addressing the issues of leadership and governance in the nation. He stated, “Our country today is at a crossroads. It is a time for all of us to do a sober reflection. The problem is not just down to leadership. It also involves the followership.”
Abure called for a renewed mindset and philosophy within the Labour Party, emphasizing its potential to drive positive change. He expressed hope for leaders who embody dignity and integrity, capable of advancing developm
ent in Nigeria.
