Man Rejects N14,000 Dowry Refund as Wife Seeks Divorce in Kaduna Shari’a Court

Law Court

A businessman, Aliyu Sulaiman, has declined a N14,000 dowry refund from his wife, Zainab Sulaiman, during a divorce hearing at a Shari’a court in the Rigasa area of Kaduna State.

The court session, which took place on Tuesday, saw the woman asking for the court to end her marriage through Khul’i — a form of divorce under Islamic law where a woman initiates separation and returns her bride price.

Zainab told the court she was willing to return the dowry of N14,000 to end the marriage. However, Aliyu told the court he would not take the money back, noting that his decision was based on the well-being of their children.

“I agree that the marriage should be dissolved. The court can grant my wife her prayer for divorce,” Aliyu said in court.

The presiding judge, Malam Muhammad Adamu, acknowledged that under Shari’a law, the husband has the right to accept or reject the dowry refund. Since Aliyu was not interested in taking it back, the court accepted his position and proceeded to finalize the separation.

“I Muhammad Adamu-Shehu hereby dissolve the marriage between Zainab Sulaiman and Aliyu Sulaiman,” the judge declared.
