Manchester United Pull Off Stunning Europa League Comeback Against Lyon, Advance to Semis

Manchester United staged a dramatic comeback against Lyon in a thrilling Europa League quarter-final match at Old Trafford on Thursday, winning 5-4 after extra time to progress to the semi-finals with a 7-6 aggregate score.

With just six minutes left in regular time, United’s hopes seemed dashed as they trailed 4-2, despite holding a two-goal advantage earlier in the match. Lyon had mounted a stunning fightback, even with captain Corentin Tolisso sent off in the 89th minute. But United found a way to pull off one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent memory.

United’s evening had started well, with first-half goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot putting the home side in control. However, Lyon responded fiercely after the break. Two quick goals in the second half from Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico leveled the game, putting pressure on the Red Devils. Despite the red card for Tolisso, Lyon remained dangerous, with Rayan Cherki’s brilliant strike and Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty putting them in the lead during extra time.

United, however, were not to be outdone. Bruno Fernandes’ penalty kick and a strike from substitute Kobbie Mainoo brought the score back to 4-4. And just as it looked like the game was heading for penalties, Harry Maguire’s towering header in the final moments of extra time sealed the win for Manchester United.

This victory comes as a massive boost to United’s season, which had looked bleak just weeks ago. Sitting in 14th place in the Premier League, a loss would have almost certainly meant missing out on European football next season. But now, with their place in the semi-finals secured, they remain three matches away from winning a European trophy, which could also grant them direct entry to next season’s Champions League.
