As President Bola Tinubu marks two years in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has shared a message of both encouragement and caution. In a statement released on May 29, 2025, Buhari praised Tinubu’s efforts so far but asked Nigerians to be patient and realistic about the pace of progress.
The former president noted that important changes, like tackling inflation and reducing poverty, will not happen overnight. He urged the nation to allow the current government time to work through its reforms without the pressure of unrealistic expectations. “Reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight,” Buhari said.
According to the statement signed by his media aide, Garba Shehu, Buhari also pointed out that the efforts to improve the economy and the daily lives of Nigerians must be a shared task. He said that while the government is leading the charge, the private sector and citizens also have roles to play.
Buhari also made it clear that internal political tensions should not be allowed to block the government’s efforts. “He warned that necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics,” the statement read.
Since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, his administration has taken bold steps under the “Renewed Hope Agenda.” These include the removal of fuel subsidies, the floating of the naira, and the full repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan. However, these policies have led to a sharp rise in the cost of living, creating hardship for many Nigerians, especially the poor.
Despite this, Buhari expressed his support for Tinubu’s leadership. He encouraged citizens to stay hopeful and to trust that the country is moving in the right direction. “Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” he said.
The message comes just days after the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) officially backed President Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 elections. This move has caused notable reactions across political circles, including defections from opposition parties.
In closing his statement, Buhari offered a personal message to Tinubu: “I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”
