‘Mighty Iroko Tree Has Fallen’ – PANDEF Mourns Loss of Chief Edwin Clark

The Pan Niger Delta Forum has announced the passing of Chief Edwin Clark, a respected elder statesman and national leader. The renowned lawyer, activist, and politician died peacefully on the evening of Monday, February 17, 2025, in Abuja, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

The announcement was made through a statement signed by Olorogun (Sir) Obiuwevbi Ominimini, PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary, along with Professor College Clark from the Clark-Fuludu-Bakederemo family of Kiagbodo in Delta State and Ambassador Dr. Godknows Igali, the National Chairman of PANDEF.

Describing the loss as the fall of a “mighty Iroko tree,” the statement reflected on Clark’s remarkable contributions to public service, politics, and community development over a career that spanned over 75 years. Clark, a staunch advocate for the rights and dignity of marginalized communities, was a major figure in Nigerian politics, particularly in the South-South region and among the Ijaw ethnic group.

Throughout his life, Clark dedicated himself to issues of justice and equality, both within the political sphere and through his work in law, education, and community development. He founded PANDEF and was a co-leader of the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), where he fought tirelessly for the rights of the oppressed and for a fairer society. Additionally, he played a role in the establishment of several educational institutions, further cementing his legacy as an advocate for the development of his people.

“Pa Clark was indeed a towering figure in Nigeria, known for his tireless advocacy for justice and human rights,” the statement noted. “His brilliant mind and generous spirit will continue to inspire future generations to strive for a more just and compassionate society.”

Chief Clark’s death comes just months before his 98th birthday and follows the passing of his close associate, Pa Ayo Adebanjo. This has prompted many to reflect on the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and social landscape. PANDEF expressed solace in the biblical passage from Acts 13:36, stating, “After he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, he fell asleep and was allowed to rest.”
