Mokwa Flood Update: Two More Bodies Found as Death Toll Rises to 153

Niger State Government on Sunday announced the recovery of two more bodies, increasing the total number of casualties from the recent flood in Mokwa Local Government Area to 153.

The update was made public through a statement by Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the Government of Niger State (SSG), from Minna. According to the statement, as of June 1, 2025, the confirmed number of fatalities stands at 153.

This devastating flood has severely impacted many families and homes within the area. The government assured that it remains dedicated to supporting those affected by the disaster.

Efforts to provide assistance are ongoing, with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) working closely alongside local officials and volunteers to deliver aid and relief to survivors and displaced persons.

The statement notes, “This unfortunate disaster has affected numerous homes and individuals, and the government remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting affected families and communities.”

Authorities also reminded the public to remain calm and cautious in their communications, especially on social media platforms. Spreading false or unverified information can increase distress and confusion during this already difficult time. The government urges everyone to be sensitive and respectful to the victims and their families.

“This is a time of mourning and collective grief for us as a state as spreading unverified or sensational information only adds to the sorrow and confusion already being experienced,” the statement said.

In addition, the government calls on all residents of Niger State to cooperate fully with the ongoing relief operations and place trust in the response teams working on the ground. The SSG appealed to Nigerlites to show unity and compassion and to share only accurate information.

The statement concluded with a message of sympathy: “May the souls of those who died rest in peace and may the bereaved families have the fortitude to bear the loss.”
