Money Doesn’t Guarantee Success – Chelsea Coach Maresca

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has firmly stated that “money does not win titles” ahead of Thursday’s Conference League semi-final first leg against Djurgarden in Stockholm.

Maresca’s comments come in the wake of Chelsea’s significant spending spree, which has seen over £1 billion invested in players over the last three seasons under the ownership of US billionaire Todd Boehly.

Despite their hefty investment, Maresca emphasized that success is not merely a result of financial backing. “You don’t win games and titles with money,” he said in a pre-match press conference.

“It’s not about how much you spend in the transfer market.” While Chelsea has been dominant in the competition so far, their domestic form remains a concern, as they fight for a Champions League spot, currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League.

Maresca also acknowledged the unique challenge posed by Djurgarden’s artificial pitch, something many of his players are unfamiliar with.

“It’s completely different,” he noted, expressing his concerns over the surface. Despite this, he stressed the importance of competing without excuses.

Chelsea’s squad will be missing Robert Sanchez and Christopher Nkunku, but Maresca expects Nicolas Jackson to start. He highlighted the need for a consistent, winning mentality in his squad.
