My Past Criticism of Tinubu Driven by Desire For a Better Nigeria – Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Olatunbosun Tijani, has clarified that his past criticisms of political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, were driven by his desire for a better Nigeria.

Tijani made this statement on Monday while speaking with journalists at the inauguration of a solar-powered community ICT center in Abeokuta. The center, facilitated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), aims to improve digital access in local communities.

Addressing concerns about his earlier stance against the government, Tijani described Tinubu as a courageous leader tackling Nigeria’s complex challenges. He explained that his decision to serve in Tinubu’s administration stemmed from his belief in the President’s leadership and vision for the country.

“It was not about how easy, it was about intention, because leadership is about intentions,” Tijani stated.

He further noted that Tinubu has introduced policies that directly benefit Nigerians, such as the student loan scheme designed to improve access to education for young people.

He also pointed to the removal of the fuel subsidy, a move he believes has allowed the government to redirect resources toward national development. Additionally, he noted Tinubu’s efforts to reduce Nigeria’s debt servicing burden, freeing up funds for critical projects.

Tijani’s remarks come after Senate President Godswill Akpabio recalled that his nomination as a minister faced significant opposition due to his previous criticisms of lawmakers and the government.

During a special Iftar dinner marking Tinubu’s 73rd birthday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Akpabio shared how the Senate was initially hesitant about Tijani’s appointment.

“Mr. President, we confirmed him because we knew you must have seen something special in him. You are never wrong when it comes to your judgment of people,” Akpabio was quoted as saying.

Akpabio added that despite initial resistance, the Senate ultimately trusted Tinubu’s decision, allowing Tijani to take up his ministerial role.

Tinubu himself acknowledged that some of his close associates strongly opposed Tijani’s appointment due to the minister’s past statements on social media. However, the President defended his choice, stating that past criticism should not overshadow a person’s abilities and potential contributions.

“Because he criticises me does not mean he has nothing to offer,” Tinubu stated.

He further noted that Tijani’s previous frustrations could now serve as motivation for him to contribute positively to governance.

“When I picked him, it was tough. My close confidantes, who had read his comments on social media, objected, saying, ‘No, never.’

“I said, ‘Yes, he is talented. Because he criticises me and pours abuse on the parliament does not mean he has nothing to offer.’

“Maybe his frustration at that time will drive him to contribute more to governance. And today, he is doing that, and I am very proud of him,” Tinubu added.
