NAF Probes Death of Detained Air Force Corporal

The Nigerian Air Force has opened a formal investigation into the death of one of its personnel, Corporal A. S. Wulumba, who was detained at the Bauchi Command before he passed away. His death has raised serious concerns within and outside the military.

Corporal Wulumba was reportedly held in a guardroom after he arrived late for duty on May 4, 2025. According to his sister, Numdarai Wulumba, her brother informed her about the detention shortly after it happened.

She claimed the late arrival was due to health issues, but said the commanding officer did not accept his explanation and instead ordered that he be locked up.

She further noted that, “Detention for minor offences like lateness is not supposed to exceed 24 hours, according to military rules. He should have been court-martialled if necessary, not locked up indefinitely. Now he’s gone.”

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has promised to look into the matter thoroughly.

Speaking on Tuesday, NAF’s spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, confirmed the death and noted that the military has already set up a board of inquiry to investigate.

“The NAF deeply regrets to confirm the unfortunate passing of Corporal A. S. Wulumba. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

“The loss of any of our personnel is profoundly felt across the Service. In line with standard procedure, a board of inquiry has been convened to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.

“Further information will be provided as the investigation progresses. The NAF remains committed to the welfare of its personnel and to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency.”
