The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has requested faster delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States to support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and improve internal security.
Abubakar made this known during a high-level Programme Management Review Meeting held in San Diego, California, from June 9 to June 13, 2025. According to a statement issued by Nigerian Air Force spokesman, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the meeting included top officials from the U.S. government and Bell Textron, the American company producing the helicopters.
The Air Chief noted that Nigeria is fully committed to receiving and integrating the new helicopters as soon as possible. He explained that early delivery of the aircraft will help improve the Air Force’s capabilities and contribute to ongoing efforts to defeat terrorism across the country.
“We are deeply grateful to the United States Government for its enduring strategic partnership with Nigeria. The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters will significantly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness. We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process,” the statement partly read.
The AH-1Z Viper is a modern attack helicopter equipped with advanced weapons and targeting systems. It is known for its speed, accuracy, and ability to perform in challenging environments. The Nigerian Air Force believes this platform will be a game-changer in its ongoing operations, especially in regions affected by insurgency and banditry.
Abubakar also noted that the partnership with the U.S. is an important part of Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its military and improve national security. He said the meeting in California helped both parties review progress and adjust plans to make sure the helicopters are delivered on time.
