The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated 50 trailer loads of counterfeit drugs and uncovered hidden weapons during an ongoing operation at the drug market near Niger Bridge Head, Onitsha, Anambra State.
The agency, which began its crackdown on fake drugs at the market on February 10, 2025, discovered two rifles, live cartridges, machetes, and other weapons concealed by unidentified individuals. NAFDAC officials believe the weapons may have been intended for an attack, possibly targeting its South-East Director, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, who regularly conducts debriefings at the market.
Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s Director-General, revealed this information while addressing journalists. Represented by Iluyomade, she noted that security operatives also prevented two break-in attempts at a storage facility holding seized drugs and arrested two suspects in connection with the incidents.
She assured the public that the operation would continue, stating that it was a nationwide effort to remove fake drugs from circulation and was not directed at any specific individuals or groups.
“With prompt interventions of our security, we saw and recovered dagger, machetes, two guns and rifles. All other nights, we have arrested people who try to break in and do one thing or another in this market. They are in custody and volunteering useful information,” she said.
