The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has advised Nigerians not to rush to judgment over the recent allegation involving ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.
His comments come after a video from Tompolo’s 54th birthday party went viral, sparking a wave of controversy.
The video showed Tompolo dancing while a man threw wads of ₦1,000 notes in the air. This act was seen by many as a breach of the Central Bank’s rules against Naira abuse, leading to public calls for EFCC action.
Some Nigerians claimed the anti-graft agency was silent because of Tompolo’s influence, and they challenged the EFCC to act if it truly believed in justice for all.
In response to the backlash, Olukoyede, during an interview on TVC News, said that Tompolo has already been invited by the Commission for questioning. He stressed that people must not assume guilt before investigations are concluded.
Olukoyede noted, “We have invited Tompolo, the whole Nigerians know that, and we said there is no human that is above the law.”
He continued, “Nobody should go and condemn Tompolo for the allegation. It’s a mere allegation for now. We have subjected the video to forensic analysis because these days, people can impose… you know?”
The EFCC chair pointed out that modern technology makes it easier to manipulate videos and that the agency must examine all evidence carefully before reaching any conclusion.
“Not until we conclude the case, we cannot say Tompolo is guilty or not. We must give every Nigerian fair hearing or benefit of doubt,” he added.
