NANS Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to FG Over Abandoned Northeast Road Projects

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone E, has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to take urgent action on four major road projects in the northeastern region of Nigeria.

The students’ body demanded that contractors handling the projects return to work immediately or face mass protests across the affected states.

In a statement issued by Zone E Coordinator, Umar Afkawa, NANS expressed frustration over the prolonged delays in completing critical road projects. Afkawa highlighted that the ultimatum began on Thursday and warned that the students’ union would not hesitate to take drastic measures if the Federal Government failed to act.

The roads in question are the Numan-Gombe, Numan-Jalingo, Damaturu-Buni Yafi, and Biu-Garkida routes. These roads are vital for transportation, economic activities, and everyday travel for residents, students, and commuters in Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, and Borno states.

NANS called on the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to provide a clear timeline for completing the projects while urging the government to address all issues delaying the work.

The statement reads, “Failure to comply with these demands within the stipulated 14 days will lead to mass protests in Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba and Borno states.

“The association will mobilise students and community members to demand action. It will also engage with relevant stakeholders to escalate concerns.”

According to Afkawa, the abandoned projects have caused significant hardships, making travel unsafe and inconvenient for road users. He emphasized that despite the government’s repeated assurances, no meaningful progress has been seen, which led to the students’ growing impatience.
