Nationwide Protests: Organizers Reveal Venues, Other Details

In preparation for the upcoming nationwide protests against economic hardship, scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024, organizers have released comprehensive details of the planned events. This announcement follows a request from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

Attorney Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, representing the organizers, disclosed the venues and locations for the protests in a letter addressed to the IGP. The letter emphasizes the commitment of the police to ensure citizens’ rights to public gatherings are respected.

“We act as solicitors to the TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT,” stated Adegboruwa, referring to the letter dated July 26, 2024. He mentioned the movement’s acknowledgment of the IGP’s efforts to comply with laws granting the right to public meetings, rallies, and processions. Adegboruwa also highlighted the need for the police to provide adequate coverage and protection during the protests.

The organizers have requested contact details for the police officers assigned to oversee the events. Specifically, they are seeking information about the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police involved in the security arrangements. This information is vital for ensuring the protests remain peaceful and orderly.

Furthermore, Adegboruwa proposed a virtual meeting with the IGP to facilitate broader participation. He noted, “We are delighted to attend the meeting with the Inspector-General of Police as requested. However, to achieve enlarged participation, we request that the said meeting be held virtually, to give room for all stakeholders to attend.” He specified that the meeting would include Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), other lawyers, and civil society organizations. The organizers are awaiting the Zoom link for this virtual meeting.
