Ndume Backs Tinubu’s Foreign Goods Ban, Says It Will Boost Local Industry and Jobs

The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has given his support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s latest decision to halt the importation of certain foreign goods into Nigeria. Ndume, a senior senator and former Chief Whip of the Senate, noted that this move would bring needed relief to local producers and strengthen the country’s struggling economy.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Ndume reacted to a presidential directive made public following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, told journalists that all federal ministries, departments, and agencies must now prioritize made-in-Nigeria goods and services when spending public funds.

Idris noted that the move would “put Nigeria at the centre of every kobo the government spends.” The announcement has since drawn reactions from political figures and economic observers across the country.

Responding to the news, Senator Ndume described the development as “heartwarming” and praised President Tinubu for taking what he called a courageous and timely decision.

“This will be a major boost for indigenous businesses amid the slipping Nigerian economy,” Ndume said. He added that if the plan is properly carried out, it will help protect local businesses from the tough competition posed by cheaper and sometimes lower-quality imported goods.

Ndume also noted that the ban will create more jobs, reduce pressure on the foreign exchange market, and strengthen the value of the naira. “With protection of local industries, there will be employment for our employable youths,” he stated. “The measure will also boost our Gross Domestic Product and the value of Naira will appreciate as there will be less strain on our foreign reserves.”
