NGF Mourns Niger Flood Victims

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has sent its heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Niger State following a devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area that led to the loss of many lives and destruction of property.

The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, in a statement released on Friday, said the forum was deeply saddened by the tragic event. He noted the seriousness of the disaster and expressed strong support for Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the residents of the affected area.

At least 21 people were confirmed dead due to the flood, which struck the Mokwa area earlier in the week. Homes, businesses, and public infrastructure were reported to be heavily damaged, with the economic cost running into millions of naira.

“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum stands in solidarity with the government and people of Niger State on the devastating flood that has wreaked huge havoc in Mokwa town of the state,” AbdulRazaq stated.

The NGF chair also noted that the scale of the destruction was alarming. He extended sympathy to the families of those who died or were injured, and praised the prompt response from emergency teams.

“We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community. We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and express our support to the state government at this difficult time.”

He also mentioned the efforts made by the state to manage the crisis. “We also commend the interventions of the Niger State Government and its coordination with the emergency responders to support the victims of this disaster.”

The flooding in Mokwa has renewed concerns about the growing impact of climate change across Nigeria. AbdulRazaq noted that the event was a reminder of the urgent need for preventive and responsive measures by both national and state governments.

“This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live,” he said. “We commit ourselves as leaders of our people to continue to work with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to not only help our people cope with this global challenge but also to strengthen mitigative actions and relief institutions.”

He concluded by offering prayers for the affected families and called for public cooperation with relief agencies.

“We pray God to console families who have lost loved ones and properties in the Mokwa incident, and we urge citizens to support the government’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and to cooperate with agencies working to assist those in urgent needat this time.”
