Niger Tanker Explosion: Death Toll Rises to 98, 69 Injured, 20 Shops Burnt – NSEMA

The Niger State Emergency Management Agencu, NSEMA, has provided an update on the tanker explosion that occurred at Dikko Junction. The tragic incident, which took place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, has caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction.

The Director General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah, shared that as of 12:00 pm on January 20, 2025, the death toll had risen to 98.

Additionally, 69 people sustained injuries in the explosion, with many currently receiving medical treatment in various hospitals across the state. The situation remains critical for several victims who are battling severe burns and other life-threatening conditions.

The explosion was triggered when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and ignited. Witnesses reported that the resulting fire spread rapidly, engulfing nearby structures and leaving chaos in its wake. Among the properties destroyed were 20 shops located close to the accident site, dealing a heavy blow to local businesses and residents.

In his statement, Abdullahi Baba Arah described the incident as “deeply tragic and unfortunate,” emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to prevent similar occurrences. He also commended emergency responders for their swift action, which helped mitigate further damage.
