Nigeria Loses Another Star as Okoli Dumps Super Eagles for Italy’s Azzurri

Memeh Caleb Okoli, a promising young defender, has announced his decision to represent Italy’s national team instead of Nigeria’s Super Eagles. This move marks a significant loss for Nigeria as it loses another talented player to a European country.

Okoli, who plays as a center-back for Leicester City, recently made headlines with his Premier League debut against Aston Villa. His performance in the match was notable, particularly because he played alongside Wilfred Ndidi, a Nigerian international. Despite this connection, Okoli has opted to join the Italian national team, where he has just received his first senior call-up.

At a press conference, Okoli shared his excitement about his recent achievements. “I had great emotions. The Premier League debut was very important for me. I only knew about the senior [Italy] call-up a few days earlier, and I am really happy with it,” he said. He also expressed optimism about his future with Italy, stating, “I think this experience will give me a lot, and I’m ready to bring what I’ve learned here.”

The decision to represent Italy has sparked discussions about the challenges facing both Italy and Nigeria’s national teams. Okoli reflected positively on his experience with Italy’s Under-21 squad, mentioning former teammates such as Fagioli, Ricci, Bellanova, and Udogie, who are now making strides in top European leagues. He believes that Italy is on a promising path for nurturing young talent.

Okoli also spoke about the influence of Italian football legend Gianluigi Buffon. “Buffon’s speech was emotional, and I immediately understood his role in this national team. I am convinced everyone will change their mind about the national team,” Okoli stated. He is hopeful that the Azzurri will continue to improve and is eager to contribute to their success.
