NIPOST to End Cash Payments July 1

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has unveiled a major transformation plan aimed at modernizing its services to meet current digital and technological standards.

Speaking on Monday, Director of Corporate Communications Franklin Alao described the initiative as a ‘Change of Renewed Hope Berths at NIPOST Shores.’

This initiative is aimed at aligning the agency with modern global practices, addressing the needs of Nigeria’s rapidly growing digital economy, and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Central to the changes is a bold step towards a cashless payment system. Starting July 1, 2025, all NIPOST counters nationwide will stop accepting physical cash payments. Customers will instead use approved electronic platforms for every transaction at post offices.

“A major highlight of the reform package is the transition to a fully cashless system. Beginning July 1, 2025, all Post Office counters nationwide will no longer accept cash payments for their services. Customers will be required to use approved electronic channels for all transactions,” the statement read.

NIPOST notes that the move is aimed at promoting safety, speeding up service delivery, and improving transparency. It also noted that this is one part of a broader reform package designed to build a more accountable, efficient, and customer-friendly organisation.

As part of the transformation, NIPOST said it will introduce a reward and recognition program based on performance. This system will motivate workers to maintain high standards while disciplinary actions will be taken against misconduct, ensuring integrity across the board.

The postal agency extended appreciation to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, for his guidance. It also acknowledged the role of NIPOST Board Chairman, Barrister Isaac Kekemeke, for his strategic input, and praised Postmaster General and CEO, Tola Odeyemi, for leading the reforms and focusing on staff welfare and training.

According to NIPOST, the overall goal of the reform is to rebuild trust in the postal system and transform it into a modern, tech-based organisation with the mission of “Connecting Nigeria, Delivering Solutions, and Improving Lives.”
