In a proactive move to address labor concerns, the Taraba State government has officially announced a new minimum wage of N70,000 for state workers. The decision comes just ahead of a planned December 1 strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) aimed at states that have yet to increase the minimum wage to national standards.
Paul Maigida Tino, the state’s Head of Service, released a statement confirming the new wage structure, which will come into effect in November 2024. According to Tino, this step underscores Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas’ dedication to the welfare of the state’s workforce.
“I wish to inform you that His Excellency, the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the implementation of a N70,000 new minimum wage for workers in Taraba State, effective from November 2024, in line with his administration’s dedication to meeting the yearnings and aspirations of workers,” Tino stated.
Civil servants in Taraba, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed their gratitude for the wage increase, calling it a “much-needed relief” amidst rising living costs.
However, they urged the government to follow through with timely implementation, voicing concern over past delays in pay adjustments. Workers also requested the return of annual pay increments, which have been suspended in recent years.
