NNPC Invites Obasanjo to Inspect Refineries Amid $2 Billion Spending Controversy

  1. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended an open invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to visit its recently rehabilitated refineries. The move comes after Obasanjo publicly expressed doubts about the success of the $2 billion spent on the facilities’ revamp.

During a television interview, Obasanjo criticized the state of Nigeria’s refining operations. He recalled similar challenges during his presidency and questioned the effectiveness of the massive investment in the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.

Highlighting his skepticism, Obasanjo stated: “I was told not too long ago that since that time, more than two billion dollars have been squandered on the refinery, and they still will not work. If anyone tells you now that it is working, why are they still with Aliko? Aliko will not only make his refinery work but also make it deliver.”

In response, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, acknowledged Obasanjo’s stature and contributions to Nigeria but emphasized the progress made by NNPC. He described the company’s transformation from a loss-making entity into a global energy powerhouse.

According to Soneye, the current refinery overhauls are extensive upgrades aimed at meeting world-class standards, unlike the previously ineffective Turnaround Maintenance.

Soneye credited the improvements to the leadership of the NNPC board under Group CEO Mele Kyari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s energy policies.

To address Obasanjo’s concerns, Soneye said, “We warmly invite President Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his guidance. This visit will offer an opportunity to witness the progress we have achieved under NNPC Limited’s leadership.”
