Prominent human rights lawyer and activist, Comrade Deji Adeyanju, has strongly criticized alleged threats to the life of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his family. Speaking on Monday night, Adeyanju called the threats an attack on free speech and the democratic process in Nigeria.
Adeyanju expressed concern over the increasing hostility toward opposition figures, stating, “I condemn the threat to HE Peter Obi’s life for being a vocal voice of opposition in Nigeria. No harm or persecution must come to him.” He emphasized that holding leaders accountable and criticizing the government are fundamental democratic principles and should be encouraged rather than punished.
According to Adeyanju, such threats signify a troubling shift in Nigeria’s political climate. “Nigeria is sinking into a full-blown dictatorship and a one-party state before our very eyes. All the concerns of HE Peter Obi are timely and spot on,” he added.
The controversy began after Peter Obi delivered a New Year message urging the government to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians. In the message, titled “Nigeria Needs Selfless and Exemplary Leadership”, Obi highlighted the worsening living conditions in the country. However, the speech reportedly led to accusations of incitement, with some alleging that Obi had “crossed the line.”
In response, Obi revealed on social media platform X that he had received direct threats against his life and family. “Have I really crossed the line? My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me,” Obi wrote.
