The National Population Commission (NPC) has achieved a significant milestone by registering over 10 million children and issuing them birth certificates across Nigeria. This development was disclosed by Alhaji Nasir Kwarra, the NPC Chairman, in a statement released in Abuja by Talibat Oloruntoba, the Director of the Public Affairs Department.
The announcement coincided with a special ceremony at Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja, where the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, handed over a birth certificate to the first baby of the year. The First Lady was represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, during the event.
Represented by Bala Banya, the Federal Commissioner from Katsina, Kwarra highlighted the commission’s dedication to ensuring that every Nigerian child receives proper registration and a birth certificate. “No child, irrespective of location, should go unregistered,” he emphasized.
With the digitization of the registration process and collaboration with the Primary Health Care Agency, the NPC is making it possible for children born in even the most remote areas to be registered. Additionally, the NPC plans to open more than 4,000 new registration centers nationwide to increase accessibility for parents.
Dr. Telson Ojogun, Director-General of the NPC, outlined how modern technology is being utilized to provide every registered child with a unique identity. He also encouraged citizens to register deaths, aiding in the maintenance of a comprehensive population database.
