NSCDC Blames Deadly Bayelsa Attack on Oil Thieves

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Bayelsa State has said that last week’s deadly ambush on its operatives was the handiwork of oil thieves determined to hinder ongoing security operations in the region.

According to a statement issued by the Bayelsa State Command, the attack, which took place on April 10, led to the tragic death of one officer and left three others injured.

The incident happened on the waterways near Igbomotoru community in the deep swamp area of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area while the officers were returning from a joint patrol with Tantita Security Services, a private firm assisting in the fight against oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

Bayelsa NSCDC Commandant, Eweka Douglas, confirmed that the patrol team had earlier carried out an anti-vandal mission before it was suddenly ambushed by gunmen suspected to be linked to illegal oil operations.

“The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m., on April 10, as the joint team was returning from an anti-vandal operation. The officers were ambushed, and a gun battle ensued, resulting in the unfortunate death of one NSCDC personnel,” he said.

Douglas noted that the corps will not allow the attack to weaken its resolve or deter its efforts in curbing illegal oil activities in Bayelsa and the broader Niger Delta region. “The NSCDC will not be deterred by attacks from vandals intent on sabotaging government efforts to eradicate illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta,” he added.

He also noted that the command is working closely with other security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the ambush. He called on local communities to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing information that can help track down criminal elements.
