The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General O.O. Nafiu, on Friday visited the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Anambra State, where he met with over a thousand newly inducted corps members and reminded them of the value of their one-year national service.
The visit, which was warmly received by the camp community, brought together 1,186 corps members—679 males and 507 females—who are currently undergoing orientation in the state. The DG took time to engage directly with the young graduates, holding a face-to-face session that allowed open interaction and mutual learning.
Brigadier General Nafiu noted that the service year should not be seen only as a requirement, but as a rare chance to build the nation through positive contributions. He also stressed the need for corps members to stay active in all camp activities, including lectures and skill acquisition sessions designed to build self-reliance and entrepreneurial strength.
“See your one-year service, not merely as a mandatory obligation, but as a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development. Ensure active participation in lectures and the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme.
“Be financially discipline and cultivate a saving culture. Respect the customs and traditions of host communities, be responsible in the use of social media and digital platforms. Have mutual respect for corps members and NYSC officials.”
The camp’s atmosphere was filled with excitement as the DG joined in celebrating the birthdays of some corps members. A symbolic birthday cake was cut, and the DG joined in a lively dance session as the camp’s observation squad played “Lonely at the Top.” The gesture brought smiles to many faces and created lasting memories for the participants.
In a move that boosted morale, Brigadier General Nafiu donated two cows to the camp, which sparked loud cheers and applause from the corps members, who expressed gratitude for his thoughtfulness.
The event was officially opened with a welcome speech by the Anambra State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Pauline Ojisua. She praised the DG’s leadership and acknowledged the discipline and coordination of the corps members. She noted that the presence of the Director General served as a great motivation to the young Nigerians in camp.
The visit also featured a cultural display by Platoon 5, who presented a vibrant Edo dance performance. The display earned a standing ovation and set a colorful tone for the day’s events.
