Oba Abimbola Owoade Officially Crowned 46th Alaafin of Oyo

Oba Abimbola Owoade has been crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The historic coronation took place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, drawing a large crowd of royal figures, state officials, and residents who gathered to witness the cultural event.

The new Alaafin takes over from Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83 after serving as Alaafin for over five decades. Oba Owoade’s installation marks a significant moment in Yoruba history, as the Alaafin holds a respected and symbolic position in the region’s traditional leadership.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde led the official coronation proceedings. The event was attended by several high-ranking traditional rulers from across Yorubaland. Among the notable guests were the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams.

Security within the city was noticeably tight, as the Oyo State Government had made early preparations to ensure the safety of attendees. Officers were stationed in key areas across Oyo and nearby towns to manage the large crowd and maintain order throughout the celebration.

Before the coronation, Oba Owoade completed the mandatory traditional rites known as Oro Ipebi, which lasted for 21 days. These rites, deeply rooted in Yoruba customs, were concluded on March 29, 2025.

The official presentation of the staff and instrument of office had already taken place on January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan. This formal act confirmed Oba Owoade as the rightful occupant of the Alaafin’s throne.

Locals in Oyo and across the southwest region of Nigeria have shown excitement and support for the new monarch, with many welcoming him with chants, traditional music, and dances during the ceremony.
