Obasanjo, Osinbajo, Obi, Abiodun Pay Last Respect to Late Afenifere Leader Ayo Adebanjo

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has described the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, as a symbol of integrity, justice, and a staunch advocate of true federalism, who always sought the betterment of Nigeria.

Speaking at the funeral service of the late Afenifere leader, held at St. Phillip Anglican Church in Isanya Ogbo, Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State, Abiodun described Adebanjo as “a titan of integrity, justice and a dogged fighter of true federalism.”

Governor Abiodun acknowledged that Adebanjo spent his life fighting for democratic principles and stood firm against military rule during critical periods of Nigeria’s history. He said Adebanjo’s lifelong commitment to fair governance and restructuring made him a major voice in the call for a federal system that benefits every region equally.

The funeral was attended by several prominent personalities, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. Other dignitaries included former Ogun State Governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Yemi Cardozo, and former Deputy Governor Senator Adegbenga Kaka.

Adebanjo, a veteran lawyer and politician, passed away in Lagos on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96. He was widely respected as one of the last direct associates of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and his voice remained strong in the nation’s political discourse until his final days.

The governor said; “Chief Adebanjo was a dogged fighter of true federalism. He persistently argued that Nigeria’s over centralised system of government bred economic imbalance and ethnic tension

“Under his leadership, Afenifere, the Pan Yoruba socio-political group was revitalised becoming a potent force with democratic wisdom pushing for regional integration, restructuring and devolution of powers.

“Beyond politics, he was deeply committed to preserving the rich Yoruba culture, he denounced nepotism, corruption and impunity whenever they rear up their ugly heads and becoming a moral compass for all.

“As Nigeria continues his walk towards democratic consolidation, the life of Chief Ayo Adebanjo remains a timeless blueprint for Nigeria, one defined by courage, conviction and unbending integrity.

“His ideals will continue to live on the heart of millions and his contributions shall continue to serve as path to building a just, united and truly federal Nigeria.”

The Archbishop of Lagos Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Remo Diocese, Bishop Michael Fape, who led the service, urged all Nigerians to live purpose-driven lives. In his sermon themed “The Purpose of a Glorious Life,” drawn from John 18:37-38, Bishop Fape said everyone must consider how they use their time before death comes.

He described Adebanjo as a fearless voice who stood for justice, fairness, and true democratic values. “Jesus lived a life of purpose… same could also be said of Adebanjo,” he said.

Fape also called on leaders at all levels to learn from the values Adebanjo lived by. According to him, Nigeria would be in a better place if more citizens, especially leaders, followed the late icon’s example of service, courage, and integrity.
