A former Rivers State Commissioner for Works and respected elder statesman, Chief David Briggs, has strongly criticized Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike for his controversial comments about former Governor Peter Odili.
In a statement to reporters in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Briggs expressed disappointment over Wike’s remarks, specifically Wike’s claim that he “resurrected” Odili politically. Briggs described the statement as deeply insulting to both Odili and the people of Rivers State.
Briggs, who previously served as Commissioner for Water Resources under Odili, emphasized his close relationship with the former governor, calling him a “father figure” and a guiding influence throughout his political career.
He lamented Wike’s actions, accusing him of rewriting history and disrespecting Odili’s significant contributions to the state.
“I served under Dr. Peter Odili as Commissioner for Works and Water Resources. I had a close father-son relationship with him when I was a local government chairman,” Briggs explained. “He has been and remains a father figure.
“Dr. Peter Odili is a respected leader and mentor. To claim that Wike ‘resurrected’ him is not just an insult to Odili but to all Rivers people,” Briggs stated.
The tension stems from a prolonged political feud between Wike and Odili, exacerbated by Odili’s support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Wike’s former ally turned rival.
Briggs accused Wike of creating discord in Rivers State, suggesting that the minister thrives on conflict to maintain relevance.
“Wike cannot survive in a peaceful environment,” Briggs said. “He has caused enough harm in Rivers State, and he will continue to create problems. How can he say he resurrected Peter Odili? If Odili was so irrelevant, why did he return like a prodigal son?”
Briggs also highlighted Odili’s past political contributions, citing his support for notable figures, including Dame Patience Jonathan. He questioned Wike’s narrative and urged him to apologize to the people of Rivers State.
Briggs further expressed disappointment over President Bola Tinubu’s silence on the matter, accusing the presidency of tolerating political opportunism. He hinted at exposing more details about Wike’s actions, including claims of past deceptions involving Odili.
“The future of Nigeria depends on building a solid foundation today,” Briggs concluded. “Wike must apologize, or more revelations will follow.”
