Ogun Court Limits Protest Locations, Time

The Ogun State High Court has issued a directive restricting the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests to four designated locations within the state. The court’s ruling, delivered on Wednesday, also confines the protest activities to a specific timeframe, from 8 am to 5 pm.

The specified locations for the protests include MKO Stadium in Abeokuta, Ansar-ud-Deen Comprehensive High School in Ota, Remo Divisional High School in Sagamu, and Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.

This decision follows an application submitted by the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN). Justice O. Ogunfowora, presiding over the case, emphasized that the protests scheduled from 1 August 2024 to 10 August 2024 must adhere strictly to these locations and times.

The court’s order aims to balance the protesters’ right to demonstrate with the need to maintain public order and protect non-protesting citizens. The Attorney-General highlighted that the chosen locations span the four divisions of the state, covering its three senatorial districts. This arrangement is intended to ensure that participants across the state can join the protests conveniently and safely.

In addition to location restrictions, the ruling mandates that all protest activities cease outside the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. Justice Ogunfowora tasked the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State with the responsibility of enforcing these regulations, ensuring that the demonstrations are confined to the specified areas and times.
