The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has issued a strong warning to police officers in the state, cautioning them against actions that could damage the reputation of the force. He particularly reminded them that they were not trained to kill and must handle firearms responsibly.
The warning was given during his visit to the Ilaro Area Command, where he addressed officers as part of efforts to reinforce professionalism and strengthen public trust in the police. The visit also served as an opportunity to communicate key directives from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Ogunlowo made it clear that any officer found carrying out official duties while dressed in plain clothes instead of the required police uniform would face serious disciplinary action. This directive aligns with the Inspector General’s efforts to ensure that officers maintain a professional appearance while on duty.
During his address, the commissioner also met with newly posted constables across various divisions. He urged them to be professional in their dealings with the public and treat citizens with respect. The CP noted that officers must always remember they are public servants, responsible for ensuring safety, not instilling fear.
He further reminded officers that firearms should never be used to intimidate or harm innocent citizens. He stressed that every officer carrying a weapon must fully understand the laws guiding its use, ensuring that force is applied only when absolutely necessary and within legal limits.
In addition to his warnings about misconduct and firearm use, Ogunlowo also addressed the management of police resources, particularly patrol vehicles. He advised officers to handle these assets with care, warning against reckless driving or misuse that could lead to damage. According to him, police vehicles are meant to serve the public and should not be exploited for personal gain.
