The local government has taken decisive action following the tragic death of a high school student, Master Monday Arijo. The 16-year-old student, who was in the Senior Secondary School 2 at Obada Grammar School located in Obada, Idi-emi, passed away after reportedly being beaten by a teacher. The Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology announced the teacher’s suspension as part of their response to the incident.
The incident occurred on a Friday, leading to an outpouring of grief and outrage from the community. Following the events that transpired, the teacher involved was immediately arrested. This swift action came after the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, was questioned for permitting corporal punishment, which is strictly prohibited by state regulations. The ministry has given the principal 24 hours to explain her decision to allow such actions in her school, raising concerns about adherence to established educational policies.
In light of this tragedy, the Ministry of Education has also reached out to Master Arijo’s family, sending a letter of condolence expressing their sorrow over the loss of their son. The letter, which was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized the student’s exceptional qualities, stating that he would be greatly missed by his classmates, teachers, and the community. It acknowledged the significant impact of his untimely passing on everyone who knew him.
The Ministry further assured the bereaved family that they would seek justice for Master Arijo and emphasized the need for strength during this difficult time. The letter conveyed heartfelt prayers for the family to find comfort and resilience as they navigate their loss.
