Ohanaeze Mourns Ayo Adebanjo, Calls Him a Brother and Ally

The Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo. The organization described him as a strong advocate for justice who firmly supported the call for an Igbo presidency in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Ohanaeze’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, conveyed the words of the group’s President General, Senator John Azuta-Mbata. He stated that the Igbo people saw Adebanjo as more than just a political ally but as a true brother who stood by them in their pursuit of fairness and national unity.

Adebanjo, a respected elder statesman, passed away last Friday at the age of 96. Ohanaeze extended heartfelt condolences to his family, especially his wife, Chief Christy Ayo Adebanjo, as well as the entire Yoruba community and his numerous supporters around the world.

The statement noted, “For us, Pa Adebanjo was not just a leader but a true brother. He stood with us in our fight for an egalitarian Nigeria and for justice in the call for Igbo presidency.”

The group praised Adebanjo’s lifelong dedication to justice and fairness, describing him as a charismatic leader whose impact went beyond ethnic lines. He was a key figure in the formation of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, where he consistently pushed for a more inclusive and balanced leadership structure in Nigeria.

Ohanaeze acknowledged that his contributions to national unity were significant, as he worked tirelessly to bridge the gaps between different regions in the country. His vision for a fair and just Nigeria, they said, aligned with their own goals, making him a valued partner in their struggle.

His efforts in championing equity, particularly in leadership representation, left a lasting mark in Nigerian politics. Ohanaeze noted that while his passing is a great loss, his principles and values will continue to inspire future generations.

“Though Nigeria has lost a rare gem, the ideals Pa Adebanjo fought for—equity, fairness, and justice—will continue to guide us. As Ohanaeze Ndigbo, we stand committed to preserving his legacy and ensuring that his vision transcends generations,” the statement read.
