Paul Iyoha, the recently impeached Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Area in Edo State, has accused Governor Monday Okpebholo of masterminding his removal from office.
Iyoha’s impeachment marks the fourth such case under Governor Okpebholo’s administration, with similar incidents occurring in Egor, Uhunmwonde, Owan East, and Orhionmwon local government areas.
These removals followed suspensions issued by the Edo State House of Assembly.
Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Iyoha condemned the impeachment, labeling it as politically motivated and illegal. He asserted that he was denied due process and a fair hearing before his suspension.
Iyoha plans to challenge the decision in court, vowing to fight what he described as a “political vendetta.”
He said “my sin” was my political allegiance to Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in the 2024 elections.
“My only offence was standing by my party candidate instead of supporting Governor Okpebholo, who hails from the same ward in Esan Central as myself.
“As a loyal member, I was duty-bound to support my party’s candidate. It is not a crime to work for one’s party. However, the governor has taken my political stance personally and is using his office to punish me.”
Iyoha insists that his loyalty to his party is not a crime and pledged to pursue justice through legal channels.
