Manchester United was held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, with goalkeeper Andre Onana at the center of attention for all the wrong reasons.
The Cameroon international had a forgettable evening at Groupama Stadium, as two crucial errors allowed Lyon to steal a point in the dying moments of the match.
Onana’s first mistake came when he allowed a soft free-kick from Thiago Almada to slip past him, which handed Lyon the lead. This mistake came just one day after Onana was criticized by former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who had called the goalkeeper “one of the worst” in the club’s history.
Despite the early setback, Manchester United rallied in the first half. Leny Yoro scored an equalizer just before the break after a clever ball from Manuel Ugarte into the box. Yoro glanced it into the net, marking his first goal for the club.
The second half saw more drama, with United pushing for the lead. Joshua Zirkzee thought he had sealed the win for United when he powered home a header from a Bruno Fernandes cross in the 88th minute.
However, Lyon refused to give up, and in the fifth minute of added time, Onana’s second error allowed Rayan Cherki to pounce on a rebound and score the equalizer.
