In preparation for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election scheduled for November 16, 2024, the Nigeria Police Force has announced a major deployment of senior officers and introduced strict security measures to ensure a peaceful and credible voting process.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has assigned Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Sylvester Abiodun Alabi as the lead security coordinator for the election. Supporting him are Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Bennett Igweh and Commissioner of Police (CP) Tunji Disu, who are tasked with reinforcing security throughout the polling.
The Nigeria Police Force issued a detailed statement highlighting several specific security protocols to be enforced during Election Day.
One key measure is a full restriction on movement across roads, waterways, and other transit routes from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., allowing only essential services such as ambulances, accredited media personnel, and fire services to operate during these hours. This move is intended to prevent any form of electoral interference or disruptions.
Additional measures include a ban on security escorts for VIPs at polling locations, a rule aimed at reducing undue influence and maintaining order at voting centers. Unauthorized security personnel, quasi-security agencies, and vehicles with sirens are also barred from functioning during the election, as only authorized personnel will be permitted in designated areas.
